Ban Gioc–Detian Falls

The Ban Gioc–Detian Falls drop over a series of broad limestone terraces into a wide pool, with the falls spanning roughly 200 metres at their widest. The cascade drops in stages rather than a single plunge, which means the whole width is visible at once from the viewing area on the Chinese bank — a spectacular wall of white water in the wet season, a more delicate spread of channels in the dry months. The surrounding landscape of karst peaks, bamboo groves, and rice paddies makes the approach as beautiful as the destination.

The standard visit involves a bamboo raft ride from the Chinese bank that drifts close to the base of the falls, close enough to feel the spray and to appreciate the scale from water level. The Vietnamese side of the falls (Ban Gioc) is, by most accounts, even more dramatic — the taller section of the cascade falls on the Vietnamese bank — but requires crossing the border properly via Cao Bang province. The Chinese side access is well organised: a concrete path leads from the car park to the viewing area, and the raft operators charge a fixed fee. Come before 9am to beat the tour groups from Nanning.

A story
The boundary between China and Vietnam runs through the middle of the waterfall, following the midpoint of the Guichun River. Bamboo raft operators navigate tourists to within metres of the Vietnamese bank — close enough to wave at the guides on the other side. The two countries administer their respective sections of the scenic area independently, charge separate entry fees, and do not currently allow crossing between sides at the waterfall itself.
