Guichun River Karst Scenery

The road from Daxin to Detian follows the Guichun River through a stretch of karst landscape that rivals anything around Guilin — limestone peaks crowding the valley, the river running jade-green between vertical walls, water buffalo standing in the shallows below the cliffs. This is a working agricultural landscape, not a scenic park, and the combination of the natural setting with rice paddies, farmhouses, and local fishing activity gives it a texture that the more heavily visited karst areas have lost.

A bicycle or motorbike makes the 18-kilometre road from Daxin to the falls much more interesting than arriving by minivan — you can stop where the light is best and walk down to the river at the points where paths lead through the paddies to the water. The road is quiet by Chinese standards and the cycling is flat. Local guesthouses near the falls rent bicycles. The river valley is also good for birds, particularly kingfishers and grey herons, which are common along the banks in the early morning.
