Duge Bridge and Huajiang Canyon

The Huajiang Canyon area, east of Anshun near the border of Guizhou and Yunnan provinces, contains some of the deepest river gorges in China. The Beipan River has cut through the plateau to depths exceeding 600 metres over millions of years, creating a landscape that looks simultaneously ancient and violent — the canyon walls are nearly vertical, the river far below visible as a thin silver line, and the exposed rock faces show the geological layering of hundreds of millions of years.

The Duge Bridge spans the canyon at its most dramatic point and is freely accessible. Walking onto the bridge and looking down requires a calm relationship with heights; the drop below is genuine and unobstructed by barriers high enough to prevent the view. Bungee jumping and zipline operations at the canyon edge offer a more literal engagement with the drop, arranged through tour operators in Anshun. The area is about 80 kilometres from Anshun city centre — allow a half day for the round trip, more if you are doing activities.

A story
The Duge Bridge, a cable-stayed span across the Beipan River gorge, held the record for the world's highest bridge until 2025, when it was surpassed by another bridge in Guizhou. Its deck sits 565 metres above the river — higher than the Eiffel Tower. On clear days, the perspective from the bridge railing, looking straight down the cliff face to the thread of river below, produces a vertigo that the photographs do not adequately prepare you for. The bridge was completed in 2016 and you can walk across it freely.
