Minzu Guangchang (Ethnic Minorities Square)

Kaili's central plaza, Minzu Guangchang, is built around a large reconstruction of a Dong-style drum tower — the pagoda-like wooden towers that serve as the communal centres of Dong villages. The tower in the square is taller and more ornate than most genuine village examples, a civic statement about the regional identity of Qiandongnan Prefecture. In the evenings, the plaza fills with residents doing the group exercise routines that have taken over public squares across China, but with a local flavour: the music sometimes includes lusheng bamboo pipe recordings.

The square is worth a brief stop mainly as an orientation point and a preview of the Dong architectural forms you'll encounter in real villages further south. The drum tower motif appears throughout Kaili's civic architecture — on bus shelters, building facades, and road barriers — in a way that's heavy-handed but at least consistently applied. The plaza itself is unremarkable but the surrounding area has reasonable street food in the evenings.
