Luhuitou Park

Luhuitou is the wooded headland that closes off the southern end of Dadonghai bay, rising about 275 metres above the sea. A road and a chair ride climb to the summit, where the giant deer statue offers the best panoramic view of Sanya — the harbour, both bays, and the green peaks of central Hainan visible on clear days. Sunsets here are reliable winners.

Admission is around 45 yuan. Go at the end of the afternoon, allow ninety minutes, and take a bottle of water — the climb is hot. A taxi from Dadonghai costs about 15 yuan one-way.

A story
The park's name — Luhuitou, or 'Deer Looking Back' — comes from a Li legend in which a hunter chasing a sika deer through the mountains pursued it to this headland, where the deer turned to face him and transformed into a beautiful young woman. They married and founded a village. The 12-metre granite statue at the summit shows the moment the deer turns.
