The Coconut Village Battle Site commemorates a 1927 engagement that is recorded as the first Chinese Civil War battle fought on Hainan. The small museum attached to the site covers this event and the subsequent Communist revolutionary activity on the island through the 1930s, including the formation of the Red Detachment of Women unit a few years later. The history here is local rather than national — the scale is small, the actors are not famous, and the documentation is provincial in the best sense.
The site receives few foreign visitors and some domestic tourists. It has the slightly melancholy quality of a place that matters enormously to the community it belongs to and is almost entirely invisible to the wider world. If you are already in Qionghai and have a genuine interest in Chinese revolutionary history beyond the landmark sites, it is worth an hour. If you are limited in time, the Red Detachment memorial park covers overlapping ground on a larger scale.
