Dongshan Ridge

Dongshan Ridge is a Buddhist mountain sanctuary north of Wanning with temples dating to the Song dynasty, rising sharply from the coastal plain and offering views over the sea and surrounding countryside from its upper levels. The main temple complex at the summit is dedicated to Guanyin and contains halls rebuilt at various points over the past thousand years, the oldest portions genuinely ancient, the newer additions varying considerably in quality.

The approach can be made on foot via a flagstone path through subtropical forest or by ropeway, which takes about ten minutes. The foot path is the better choice in the morning when the air is cool and the light is soft. Several smaller shrines and pavilions are distributed along the ridge, and the combination of religious atmosphere, mountain views, and the quality of the surrounding countryside makes this a worthwhile half-day excursion from the coast.

A story
The Song-dynasty poet Su Dongpo — who spent years in exile on Hainan — wrote a poem praising Dongshan mutton as one of the great foods of the island. The mountain's goats, which graze on wild herbs growing in the rocky terrain, have been celebrated for their flavour ever since, and visiting the temple complex without eating Dongshan mutton at one of the restaurants below is considered a missed opportunity by local opinion.
