Shihua Cave, in the hills north of Wanning city, is one of the larger limestone cave systems in Hainan, with a series of lit chambers accessible by a short walk from the entrance. The stalactite and stalagmite formations here are relatively old and well-developed, the product of the particularly wet interior upland climate, and the cave maintains a constant cool temperature that makes it a pleasant escape on hot days.
The cave complex extends for several hundred metres and is divided into three main sections, each with its own character: the entrance hall is broad and dramatic, the middle section narrows into a passage lined with flow formations, and the deepest accessible area opens into a chamber with an underground stream. The lighting is theatrical rather than natural, but the formations themselves are genuinely impressive.
