Yahu Terraced Rice Fields

The terraced rice fields at Yahu, northeast of Wuzhishan city, are among the most photographed agricultural landscapes in Hainan. The terraces step down steep hillsides in irregular curves shaped by the contours of the land rather than by any imposed geometry, which gives them a natural quality that the more famous terraced fields in Yunnan and Guangxi sometimes lack.

The best time to visit is November, when the paddies are flooded and mirror the sky, creating a landscape of silver planes descending the hillside. The harvest period in September is also dramatic, when the ripe gold of the paddy contrasts with the green ridges above. The fields are working agricultural land and the rhythm of planting and harvest shapes what you see — the farmers here are not managing the terraces for tourism but growing rice to eat and sell.
