Snow Town (Xuexiang)

Snow Town (Xuexiang) is a small mountain village in the Zhangguangcai Range about 200 kilometres southwest of Mudanjiang, famous for the extraordinary depth and weight of its winter snowfall. From late October onwards, snow accumulates on rooftops to form enormous mushroom-shaped drifts — sometimes a metre or more deep — while the surrounding pine forest is bowed double under white loads. The combined effect is genuinely startling: the village looks like an illustration from a children's book about winter, but it is completely natural.

The best time to visit is December through February, when the snow is at its deepest and most sculptural. Most visitors come on organised tours from Mudanjiang or Harbin, which is the practical approach given that Snow Town has limited independent transport. Several family-run guesthouses operate in the village and an overnight stay, waking before dawn to see the landscape before the other tourists arrive, is considerably better than a rushed day trip. The walk between the village buildings through the snow-laden forest in the early morning is the image you will carry home.

A story
Snow Town became famous in China after appearing in a series of photographs that circulated widely online in the late 2000s. The images — mushroom-shaped snow drifts burying rooftops, pine trees bowed double under their loads, warm light from the village windows — looked almost too perfect to be real. They were real, and the village has been a major winter destination ever since.
