The Hailang River (海浪河) drains into the Mudan River southwest of the city centre, and the area around its lower reaches has remained relatively undeveloped — a wetland corridor of reeds, willow scrub, and river bars that supports a surprisingly good variety of waterbirds given its proximity to the city. Herons, egrets, ducks, and occasional raptors are regular; in the migration seasons of April-May and September-October the river corridor attracts waders and passerines moving through.
It is not a managed reserve or a formal destination — there is no entrance fee, no visitor centre, and no signage directing you to the best spots. That is partly its appeal. The unpaved tracks along the bank allow for quiet birdwatching without the crowds or infrastructure of an official scenic area. The walk from the main road to the river takes about 20 minutes through agricultural land and is best in the early morning.
