Qiqihar Railway Station

Qiqihar's main railway station building dates from the Chinese Eastern Railway era of the early 20th century, and while the surrounding infrastructure has been thoroughly modernised, the original station structure retains a faded elegance that is recognisably Russian-influenced. The broad overhanging eaves, the proportions of the facade, and the general air of having been designed by engineers who expected an important future for this junction city are all characteristic of the CER's institutional architecture.

The area around the station has the particular energy of Chinese railway precincts: street food vendors, luggage porters, taxis in organised chaos, and the constant flow of arrivals and departures that makes train stations one of the most reliable windows into how a city actually functions. The station itself is a working transport hub first and a heritage structure second, which is exactly as it should be.
