Wood Carving Park

The Wood Carving Park near the city centre displays an extended relief gallery carved from local timber, depicting regional history, Ewenki and Hezhe ethnic minority life, and scenes from the forest industries that built Yichun. The carving is competent and sometimes genuinely skilled, and the subject matter — depicting a way of life connected to the forest that is now largely gone — gives it more interest than the standard "wood carving park" implies.

The gallery is built from the kind of large-diameter Korean pine logs that were the source of Yichun's timber economy for decades, which gives the displays an inadvertent commentary quality: the thing being celebrated is also the thing that consumed the resource. Whether that irony is intentional or not, the park is worth an hour and is a pleasant walk from the forest park.
