Shaolin Monastery

Birthplace of Chan Buddhism and Shaolin kung fu

One of China's most famous temples, founded in 495 AD at the foot of Mount Songshan. It is the birthplace of Chan (Zen) Buddhism and, more famously, of Shaolin martial arts. The temple complex includes the main monastery, the Forest of Pagodas (where past abbots are buried), and a museum. Martial arts schools have grown up all around the area. The site can be crowded but the historical significance is undeniable.

During the early Tang Dynasty, thirteen warrior monks from Shaolin helped the emperor Li Shimin defeat his enemies. In gratitude, the emperor allowed the monks to drink wine and eat meat — exceptional privileges for a Buddhist monastery.
