The hillsides above Dehang gorge are terraced with paddy fields worked by Miao farming families, producing a layered landscape of water and green that is especially striking in late spring (May-June) when the paddies are flooded and the reflections multiply the sky. The terracing is functional rather than decorative, maintained by communities who have grown rice on these slopes for hundreds of years and continue to do so alongside the tourism economy.
The best views of the terraces are from the upper sections of the gorge trail, looking back down toward the village and the canyon below. Early morning, when mist fills the lower gorge and the terraces catch the first light, produces the most photogenic conditions. The terraces are not a separate attraction — they are visible throughout the gorge walk and from the paths above the village.
