Golden Whip Stream

Golden Whip Stream runs for roughly seven kilometres through the heart of Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, from the main entrance area through a narrowing gorge toward Yuanjiajie. The path follows the river at valley level, meaning the sandstone columns rise on both sides rather than appearing as a distant panorama: the scale is different here, more intimate and enclosed, and the forest closes overhead in places to reduce the sky to a thin strip.

Rhesus monkeys work this trail with considerable confidence, having learned over decades of tourist traffic that visitors carry food and can be approached. The stream itself is clear enough to see the riverbed; freshwater crabs and fish are visible from the path bridges. The walk takes two to three hours at a comfortable pace and ends at the base of the Bailong Elevator, making it a natural component of the standard park circuit. It is best walked in the direction of the current — from the entrance toward the elevator — to finish at higher ground rather than beginning there.

A story
The stream takes its name from a single column beside the path that resembles, in Chinese aesthetic tradition, the golden whip carried by a general. The naming is arbitrary — dozens of the columns along the route are equally dramatic — but the name stuck and the path became the most celebrated valley walk in the park.
