Yuanjiajie Plateau

The Yuanjiajie plateau is the section of Wulingyuan most visitors prioritise, and for good reason: it holds the highest concentration of dramatic viewpoints and is the area that became globally recognizable after the Avatar films. The plateau is reached by the Bailong Elevator from the valley, or by cable car from Wulingyuan village, or on foot via steep mountain paths.

The First Bridge of the World is a natural rock arch connecting two columns, with safety railings added; standing on it and looking down at the valley 300 metres below is one of the stranger experiences the park offers. The Avatar Hallelujah Mountain is visible from several viewpoints as a free-standing column with a slight lean, coated in forest to its crown. The plateau trails loop for several kilometres between these landmarks and back to the elevator or cable car stations, with the most dramatic views coming early in the morning before haze builds and before the crowds arrive at the main viewpoints.

A story
The column known as Avatar Hallelujah Mountain was renamed in 2010 — originally called Southern Sky Column, it was officially rechristened after James Cameron confirmed that Zhangjiajie's landscape had been a reference point for Avatar's floating Hallelujah Mountains. The park administration reportedly sought and received permission from Fox before changing the name. The original Southern Sky Column designation still appears on older maps.
