Shennong Tower

The Shennong Tower rises 99 metres at the centre of the Shennongcheng Scenic Area, a complex dedicated to the mythological emperor Yan, said to have invented agriculture and herbal medicine in the region now occupied by Zhuzhou. The tower offers panoramic views of the city, the Xiang River, and the surrounding hills for ¥40; on clear days the view extends to the hills above Changsha to the north.

The tower is the focal point of a broader commemorative park that occupies a hill above the Xiang River. The park's scale and ambition — ceremonial axes, carved stone reliefs, commemorative inscriptions in large-character calligraphy — represent the Chinese tradition of monumental commemoration at its most earnest. Whether the mythological associations give the place meaning or merely provide a theme for landscape architecture is something visitors will decide for themselves.

A story
Emperor Yan (Shennong) is credited in Chinese mythology with tasting and cataloguing hundreds of plants to discover their medicinal and culinary properties. The legend holds that he had a transparent abdomen through which he could watch the effects of each plant on his digestion. One day he consumed a plant that cut through his intestines before he could take the antidote. The myth is the origin story of Chinese herbal medicine — a tradition that remains the primary healthcare system for a significant portion of China's rural population.
