Guomen Scenic Area

The Guomen Scenic Area is Manzhouli's signature attraction, a large ornamental gate structure built where the main road crosses into Russia. The gate itself is an imposing structure modelled on traditional Chinese architecture at a monumental scale, flanked by guard towers and framing a view straight into Russian territory.

The area around the gate has been developed as a walking park, with the original Qing dynasty border tablets preserved nearby. From the observation platforms you can look across at the Russian town of Zabaikalsk — close enough to see cars and buildings. The scene makes the abstract fact of an international border suddenly very concrete. The park is well maintained and best visited in the morning before tour groups arrive from the city.

A story
The border gate at Guomen is the fifth generation of a frontier marker on this spot. The current structure, 105 metres long and 43.7 metres tall, was built in 2008. Near it stands border tablet No. 41, one of the original Qing dynasty markers that defined the Sino-Russian frontier in the 1880s — the new gate and the old stone post sit just metres apart.
