The City God Temple of Suzhou is a Daoist temple embedded in the old urban fabric, dedicated to the protective deity traditionally believed to watch over the city. It is less famous than Suzhou's classical gardens, but it belongs to the same dense world of lanes, canals, shops, and ritual spaces.
A visit here adds useful contrast to the garden circuit. Instead of refined rockeries and scholar aesthetics, you see a more public, devotional side of old Suzhou, with incense, temple halls, and the everyday bustle of the surrounding streets.
