Yancheng's appeal is strongly seasonal, tied to the rhythms of its wetlands. The two best periods are spring migration (April–May), when the largest variety of shorebirds passes through, and November–February, when red-crowned cranes winter in the reserves. The hairy crab season (September–November) coincides with good weather for outdoor activities.
Summer (June–August) is hot, humid, and coincides with reduced bird activity, though the wetlands are still interesting in their own right. Winter outside the crane season (December–February) is cold and quiet, but the cranes themselves make February visits worthwhile if bird watching is the main objective. The city is never overwhelmed by tourism at any time of year.
