Dongcang Bridge

The Dongcang Bridge is a historic stone arch bridge spanning the Dongcang River in the city centre, built in the Song or Yuan Dynasty and one of the oldest surviving structures in Yixing. The single arch is high and graceful, and the bridge is still used by pedestrians. It represents the engineering style common throughout the Yangtze Delta region — a form that has barely changed in design for a thousand years.

The bridge sits in a small historic district with canal-side buildings and a few tea houses. It is not a major destination in itself but provides a pleasant stopping point in the central city, and the canal reflections of the arch are worth a photograph. The area around the bridge is one of the quieter corners of central Yixing.
