Chengxu Temple (澄虚道院) is a Taoist temple that has stood on its current site since the Yuan dynasty, predating many of the mansions that now surround it. The current buildings date largely from Qing-dynasty reconstructions, with a main hall, side pavilions, and a small garden arranged along a central axis. The complex is active: incense burns in the main hall and local worshippers come regularly, which gives it a different atmosphere from the purely tourist-facing mansions nearby.
The temple is a useful reference point for orienting yourself in the town — it sits near the centre of the old island, not far from the Double Bridge. The courtyard is a quiet retreat from the main pedestrian lanes.
