When to Go

Zhouzhuang is busiest during Chinese national holidays (National Day in October, Spring Festival in late January or February, and the May Golden Week) when crowds reduce the experience to queuing. The best times are outside these windows: early spring (March to April) when the canal mist is thickest in the mornings, and late autumn (October to November) when the foliage around the lakes turns.

Weekdays are significantly quieter than weekends year-round. Arriving before nine in the morning and leaving in the early afternoon avoids the peak of the tour bus traffic. Overnight stays during the week are the most peaceful option — the town empties after dinner and the lit canal scenery is worth experiencing.
