Wucheng Town

Wucheng (吴城) is a small town on a peninsula at the southwestern end of Poyang Lake, where the Xiu River meets the main lake body. It serves as the primary base for winter birdwatching and has guesthouses, restaurants serving freshwater fish, and a cluster of boat operators who run dawn excursions onto the lake for crane and goose viewing. The town itself has a pleasant unhurried character and some surviving Qing-dynasty buildings in its old commercial streets.

Outside birdwatching season, Wucheng is quiet to the point of sleepiness, but the lakeside setting and the enormous sky above the flat wetland landscape are worth an overnight in any season. The town holds festivals in autumn when the local fishing season opens, which is also when the first winter migrants are arriving.
