Guanyin Ancient Temple

Guanyin Ancient Temple is one of Jilin City's most active Buddhist temples, occupying a site close to the city centre that has been a place of worship for centuries. The temple is dedicated to Guanyin — the bodhisattva of compassion — and the main hall houses a revered image that is the object of regular pilgrimage from across the province.

The temple compound is compact but carefully maintained, with incense burning in the courtyards throughout the day and a resident monastic community that keeps it functioning as a living religious institution rather than a museum. The area around the temple has the typical mix of religious goods shops, tea houses, and vegetarian restaurants that accumulates around active Buddhist sites. The temple is within walking distance of the Songhua River embankment and makes a natural addition to a morning along the riverfront.

A story
The temple's main Guanyin statue — the bodhisattva of compassion — was cast in a style associated with a miracle story that has been told in Jilin since the Qing dynasty: a sculptor who went blind before he could finish the face, and who woke from prayer to find the face completed, though no one in the temple had touched the clay. Miracles of this type accumulate around significant religious images, and the story's persistence over centuries is itself a record of the temple's importance to the city.
