Kyaring Lake (Zhaling Hu)

Kyaring Lake (Chinese: Zhaling Hu) sits just west of Ngoring Lake at a similar altitude, roughly 526 square kilometres of high-altitude water in the Yellow River source region. The two lakes are separated by a narrow isthmus and are connected by a short river reach. Kyaring tends to be shallower and lighter in colour than Ngoring — more turquoise where Ngoring is deep blue — and the combination of the two in a single landscape, set against the pale plateau grassland and distant snow peaks, is one of the more remarkable vistas in China.

A small monastery sits on the isthmus between the lakes, and the area is sacred to local Tibetan communities. The northern shore of Kyaring has been documented as important nesting habitat for bar-headed geese. Like Ngoring, the lake is accessible by private vehicle from Maduo, and the standard day trip visits both lakes. The drive from Maduo to the lakes takes about 90 minutes each way on plateau roads that are unpaved in sections and can be rough in wet weather.
