Wulian Mountain

Wulian Mountain is the main inland scenic area in Rizhao's territory, rising to around 706 meters in the hills northwest of the city. It is rated as a national 4A scenic area and offers the combination of granite boulder landscapes, forests, and temple ruins that characterizes the better mountain parks in Shandong.

The hiking routes wind through valleys and up to ridge viewpoints, with a few sections involving scrambling on bare rock. The mountain is far less visited than Mount Tai and makes for a more solitary experience. From Rizhao city, bus connections are available though the mountain is primarily accessed by private car or tour group. The best seasons are spring and autumn when the heat is manageable and the vegetation is at its best.

A story
Wulian Mountain takes its name from five interconnected peaks that from certain angles appear to touch, forming a linked chain — "wu lian" means five connected. The mountain was a significant Buddhist site during the Tang Dynasty, and several of the old temple foundations survive among the granite outcrops.
