Fengchan Grand Ceremony

Nightly outdoor staging of the imperial Mount Tai sacrifices

The Fengchan Grand Ceremony is a nightly outdoor performance staged on a natural amphitheatre at the foot of Mount Tai, with the mountain itself as a backdrop. Cast of hundreds, projection effects, and elaborate music dramatise the Feng and Shan sacrifices — the imperial rites in which emperors of antiquity legitimised their rule on Taishan's summit.

It is unashamedly spectacular, in the manner of Zhang Yimou's outdoor productions across China, and it works on its own terms. The seats fill nightly in season; book ahead through a hotel or local agent. The show runs from spring through autumn, weather permitting.
