Pumen Temple

Buddhist temple on the western slopes

Pumen Temple is one of the larger Buddhist establishments on Mount Tai, sitting on the western flank away from the main pilgrimage staircase and the crowds. The complex has been rebuilt several times — most recently in the Qing dynasty — and a handful of older steles and statues survive among the courtyards.

For visitors who want to escape the bustle of the main climb, the path up to Pumen and back makes a quiet half-day. Combine with a visit to the Sutra Stone Valley nearby.
