Drum Tower

Ming-era drum tower standing at a busy crossroads in Datong's old city

Datong's Drum Tower was built in the Ming dynasty and repaired several times under the Qing. Unlike the taller drum towers of Beijing and Xi'an, it sits directly over the street, with arched passages cutting through its base. It is worth a look while walking the old city, especially as a companion to Huayan Temple, Shanhua Temple, and the Nine Dragon Screen.
