Munigou is a quieter alternative to Jiuzhaigou — a valley with travertine pools, waterfalls, and forest scenery that draws a fraction of the crowds. The Zhaga waterfall in the valley is one of the widest in Sichuan at 104 metres. The travertine formations here are younger and less coloured than at Huanglong but the hiking is more relaxed and the experience less packaged.
The valley is best visited as a day trip from Songpan town, about 50 kilometres to the south. A rough road runs up the valley past the main formations to a trailhead for higher-altitude walking. Horseback riding can be arranged in Songpan for those who want to explore the higher pastures.
