Wanglang National Nature Reserve

Wanglang is one of China's oldest nature reserves, established in 1965, and protects a critical corridor of giant panda habitat in the Min Mountains. It covers around 320 square kilometres of old-growth fir and spruce forest, rising from river valleys at 2,000 metres to ridgelines above 4,000 metres. The reserve also shelters golden monkeys, takins, snow leopards, and brown bears — a remarkably intact mountain ecosystem.

The reserve is open to visitors with permits and is best approached from Pingwu County to the east. Guided trekking is the main activity; the forest is dense and navigation without a local guide is genuinely difficult. Wildlife sightings require patience and early mornings, but the forest itself is exceptional even if the large mammals stay hidden.
