Litang Monastery

Large Gelugpa monastery above town, founded in 1580 on an older Bon site.

Ganden Thubchen Choekhorling, usually called Litang Monastery or Lithang Gompa, is the town's main sight and one of the important monasteries of Kham. It was founded in 1580 by the third Dalai Lama on the site of an older Bon temple, later destroyed and rebuilt more than once.

The monastery is as much about position as buildings. From the roofs and hillside paths you look across the town, the grassland, and the open valley that gives Litang its big-sky feeling.
