Yi Torch Festival

The Yi Torch Festival is celebrated by Yi communities throughout the Panzhihua area, typically in late July. The main events include torch-lighting ceremonies, traditional Yi music and dance performances, bullfighting and horse racing, and wrestling competitions. Panzhihua's surrounding Yi villages celebrate with particular vigour, and the festival is one of the best opportunities to see Yi traditional dress, food, and cultural practices in their community setting.

The Panzhihua Municipal Museum has exhibits on the Yi and other minority cultures of the region if you want background before attending. Festival timing varies by village and lunar calendar — ask locally for the schedule of events nearest to the city.

A story
The Torch Festival marks the Yi New Year and is one of the largest minority festivals in China. On the third day of the sixth lunar month (usually July), Yi communities across Sichuan and Yunnan light enormous torches and carry them through fields and villages. The ceremony has agricultural roots — the fire was originally used to drive away insects from crops — but it has evolved into a celebration of Yi identity that draws hundreds of thousands of participants across the region.
