Colorful Waterfall

The Colorful Waterfall is one of the park's most visited water features — a substantial drop over layered rock faces into a clear plunge pool, with the bamboo forest continuing right to the cliff edge on both sides. Water levels vary considerably through the year; the park's own advice to visit in the cooler months, when rainfall has been higher, is sound. Summer heat can reduce it to a modest trickle.

The viewing platform at the base of the falls is well-positioned, and the path that continues beyond it along the streambed is worth following for another twenty minutes even in the absence of dramatic scenery — the scale of the bamboo changes near the water, where the stems grow more thickly and the canopy is lower.

A story
The waterfall's name comes not from any artificial enhancement but from the way the mineral-rich water deposits dark green algae and pale travertine on the surrounding rock, creating a banded effect of contrasting colours that is strongest in winter when water levels rise. The same mineralogy that colours the rock is responsible for the unusual clarity of the pools at the base.
