Tianhuang Temple sits near the upper section of the park, its Buddhist halls surrounded by bamboo on all sides in a setting that makes the religious point about natural beauty and spiritual cultivation more economically than any architectural flourish could. The temple is small and active, with resident monks rather than a staff of secular attendants, and the incense smoke drifts through bamboo stems rather than open courtyard.
The approach path from the nearest parking area runs through some of the densest bamboo in the park, and the transition from the cool green tunnel to the open courtyard of the temple has a theatrical quality that is clearly understood by whoever placed the complex here. The temple is rarely crowded even when the park is busy, partly because it requires leaving the main vehicle circuit.
