Chonggu Grasslands

The Chonggu Grasslands occupy the lower elevation portion of the Yading reserve, accessible by the shuttle bus from the park entrance and serving as the first view of the three sacred peaks for most visitors. The grasslands sit at about 3,880 metres, and the view from the open meadow in front of Chonggu Monastery — all three peaks visible at once across the river valley, their snow-covered summits rising above the treeline — is the classic Yading composition.

For visitors with altitude concerns, the grasslands and Pearl Lake nearby are accessible without the demanding climb to the upper lakes and still give the full context of the three peaks. The small monastery is active and the monks here are accustomed to visitors; the interior is open during morning worship hours. The grasslands themselves are used as summer pasture by Tibetan herders and the combination of grazing yaks, the monastery, and the peak backdrop has the quality of a landscape that has looked essentially the same for centuries.

A story
Chonggu Monastery sits at the edge of the grassland at 3,880 metres and has served as the primary religious institution for the three sacred peaks since they were formally identified as bodhisattva residences in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition. The practice of circumambulating the peaks — kora, in Tibetan — begins and ends here, and the monastery's position at the entry to the most sacred terrain in the reserve gives it a religious significance beyond its modest architectural scale.
