Everest Base Camp Road

The turnoff from the Friendship Highway to Everest Base Camp (Chinese side) is about 10 km west of Xeger. The road climbs through the Pang La pass, crosses a plateau, and eventually reaches Rongbuk Monastery and then the base camp at 5,150 metres — a total of about 70 km of rough paved and dirt road from the highway.

The journey takes about two hours from Xeger. A Tibet Tourism Bureau permit is required in addition to the standard Tibet Autonomous Region permit, and these must be arranged in Lhasa or at a registered travel agency before setting out. Independent travel to the base camp road in a rented vehicle is not permitted; the route requires a registered guide and vehicle.

A story
The road from Xeger to Everest Base Camp passes through Rongbuk Monastery, at 4,980 metres the highest monastery in the world. From Rongbuk, the view of Everest's north face — framed between the monastery's whitewashed walls and prayer flags — is one of the most dramatic mountain views on earth, entirely different from the southern approach through Nepal.
