Pang La Pass

The Pang La pass sits at 5,050 metres on the road between the Friendship Highway and Everest Base Camp, about 40 km south of Xeger. The pass is famous for its northward view: on clear days, the entire Himalayan wall from Cho Oyu in the west to Makalu in the east is visible, with Everest's distinctive triangular summit prominent in the centre.

The view is not guaranteed — cloud and haze frequently obscure the peaks, and the best conditions are usually in the early morning before the valley winds build. Prayer flags mark the pass summit, and there are usually vendors selling snacks and drinks. Even if the mountains are in cloud, the landscape of the Tibetan plateau spreading in every direction is striking in its own right.

A story
On a clear day from the Pang La pass, you can see five of the world's fourteen 8,000-metre peaks at once: Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Cho Oyu, and Shishapangma. The panorama is one of the great mountain vistas on earth and lasts for perhaps a few seconds to a few minutes before cloud or haze closes in. Most days it is at least partially visible in the early morning.
