People's Square

People's Square is the formal civic centre of Ürümqi — a large paved expanse with fountains, state monuments, and the occasional ceremony or official gathering. It is flanked by major government buildings including the regional People's Government headquarters, and the overall effect is one of deliberate authority: wide, open, designed to be impressive. It is not a place that invites lingering in the way a European piazza does, but it is worth understanding as part of the city's character.

On summer evenings and public holidays the square draws locals for the fountains and the open space. Children run between the jets of water and families take photographs. The square was the site of significant violence during the July 2009 ethnic riots, in which nearly two hundred people were killed — a fact that sits uneasily beneath the current surface of normality. The security infrastructure around the square is visible and substantial. Visiting it is a way of reading the city's tensions as much as its official self-presentation.
