Jiuxiang Scenic Area

Around 90 kilometres east of Kunming, in Yiliang County not far from the Stone Forest, Jiuxiang is a vast network of karst caves cut by an underground river — the largest cave system in Yunnan and one of the most spectacular in southern China. The visitor route runs about three kilometres on raised walkways through a series of chambers and over a wild stretch of the underground river, including a 30-metre internal waterfall and several halls large enough to hold a small town.

Most travellers visit Jiuxiang as part of a combined day trip with the Stone Forest, which is on the same road. A cable car runs down into the entrance gorge and a smaller one returns visitors at the exit. Allow at least three hours in the cave system itself.
