Caledonian Waterfall Trail

The Caledonian Waterfall trail is the most popular walk in the Pano Platres area, and for good reason: it follows a shaded forest gorge down to the tallest waterfall in Cyprus, a 13-metre drop into a pool surrounded by willows and plane trees. The trail is about 3 kilometres return and takes around 90 minutes at a relaxed pace.

The path starts near the Pano Platres forestry station and drops steadily through dense pine forest before following the Kryos Potamos stream to the falls. In spring and early summer, the stream runs strongly and the falls are impressive; by August they slow to a trickle. The trail connects with the Millomeris trail for those who want a longer route. Come early in the morning in summer to beat the tour groups.

A story
The waterfall takes its name from a Scottish forestry officer who worked in the mountains in the early 20th century and was charmed by the landscape's resemblance to the Scottish Highlands. Cyprus rarely gets snow outside the highest peaks, but the Troodos pine forests in winter — quiet, cold, and wrapped in mist — do have something Highland about them.
