Somarama Temple, Bhimavaram

The Somarama temple in Bhimavaram is one of the five Pancharama Kshetras — ancient Shiva temples of great sanctity in the Godavari delta region. Built during the Chalukya period and expanded over subsequent centuries, the temple complex is dedicated to Someswara (Shiva) and draws Hindu pilgrims from across Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

The principal shrine has a distinctive gopuram tower and inner sanctum, with the Shiva lingam at the centre of daily worship. The unusual feature noted in traditional accounts — a shrine to Annapurna built atop the main temple — reflects the syncretic traditions of the region. The temple complex is most animated during the major festivals of Shivaratri, when large processions and continuous puja rituals run through the night. Outside festival times it is a serene and well-maintained site; the river setting just beyond the town adds to its atmosphere.

A story
The Pancharama temples are said to have been established after the defeat of the demon Tarakasura, whose body was divided into five lingams which fell to earth at these five locations. Each temple was built over one of the fallen lingams. The Somarama temple's lingam is called Someswara, believed to be one of the swayambhu (self-manifested) forms of Shiva.
