The Kalachakra Gompa sits above the new town, reached by a short steep climb. It is a small modern monastery — built in the 1990s — but the murals inside are vivid and the views down over the valley are excellent. Monpa monks chant the morning and evening pujas; if your timing is right you can sit at the back and listen.
The gompa is one of several Buddhist sites in and around Dirang. None of them are tourist attractions in the way that Tawang Monastery is, but together they give the town its strongly Buddhist atmosphere — prayer flags fluttering across hillsides, the smell of juniper smoke, and chants drifting out of small chapels.
