Agrasen Ki Baoli

Agrasen ki Baoli is a 14th-century stepwell hidden in plain sight off the busy Hailey Road near Connaught Place. While the location suggests commerce and offices, descend a narrow lane and you find a massive medieval structure — a long rectangular tank with 103 steps descending to the bottom, flanked by ornate arched galleries on three levels. It is one of the finest preserved stepwells in northern India.

The stepwell is believed to have been built or restored during the reign of the Tughlaqs, though local tradition attributes it to the legendary king Agrasen. Either way, it is a remarkable piece of engineering — and remarkably quiet for something that sits a short walk from one of the busiest areas in Delhi. Photography is popular here, especially in the early morning. Free entry, maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India.
