Jahaz Mahal — literally "Ship Palace" — is a large Lodi-era caravanserai in Mehrauli, so named for its elongated shape and twin domes that give it the silhouette of a vessel. Built in the 15th century, the structure encloses a central courtyard and was designed to accommodate travellers and their animals on the Delhi-Agra road. It is built of Delhi quartzite rubble and the main gateway still retains fragments of its original tile work.
The monument is maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India and is free to enter. It is less visited than the Qutb Minar complex nearby, making it a peaceful place to wander. Adjacent to it is the Hauz-i-Shamsi, Iltutmish's 13th-century reservoir, now mostly dry but still atmospherically evocative.
