The National Zoological Park of Delhi is spread across 176 acres between the Purana Qila (Old Fort) and the Yamuna Pushta. Opened in 1959, it is home to around 1,350 animals representing 130 species, including white tigers, Asiatic lions, giraffes, hippopotamuses, and a large collection of Indian reptiles. Battery-operated vehicles ferry visitors around the grounds for those who prefer not to walk the full circuit.
The zoo is most pleasant in the cooler months from October to March, when animals are more active. It is particularly popular with families and school groups. The adjacent Purana Qila moat, now a boating lake, makes for a pleasant extension to the visit.
