Tomb of Sikandar Lodi

Early 16th-century Lodi sultan's tomb standing within the landscaped grounds of Lodi Gardens

The Tomb of Sikandar Lodi stands within Lodi Gardens and is the mausoleum of Sikandar Lodi (reigned 1489–1517), the second ruler of the Lodi dynasty and one of the most capable of the Delhi Sultans. Built after his death by his son Ibrahim Lodi, it was the first tomb in India to be enclosed within a garden — a precursor to the grand Mughal garden-tomb tradition that would culminate in the Taj Mahal. The octagonal tomb chamber sits on a high platform and is surrounded by a walled garden enclosure.

The monument is set apart from the main Lodi Gardens circuit and is somewhat quieter than the more famous Bara Gumbad and Shish Gumbad. Its proportions are elegant and the interior mihrab retains fine plasterwork. Entry is included with the Lodi Gardens, which is free.
