Yogmaya Temple Mehrauli

One of Delhi's oldest continuously active temples in Mehrauli, dedicated to the goddess Yogmaya

The Yogmaya Temple in Mehrauli is one of Delhi's oldest continuously active temples, dedicated to Yogmaya, the goddess who Hindu tradition holds was created by Vishnu to be exchanged with the infant Krishna. The temple itself dates in its current form from the 19th century but the site is mentioned in texts of the Mahabharata period. It is closely associated with the ancient Phool Walon Ki Sair ("Procession of the Flower Sellers") festival held each autumn.

The temple stands just south of the Qutb Minar complex and is surrounded by the old village of Mehrauli, one of Delhi's seven historical cities. The village character of the neighbourhood — narrow lanes, old mosques, stepwells, and tombs interspersed with everyday commerce — gives a vivid sense of what most of Delhi looked like before the 20th century.
